We have been connecting customers to opportunities for more than 150 years. Yet in a fast-changing world it is vital that we continually adapt to meet the needs of our customers and to serve shareholders and other stakeholders more effectively.

In February 2020 we set out a major programme to reshape underperforming businesses, simplify the organisation and reduce costs. We are rapidly progressing in key respects, from reallocating capital in growth markets, to investing in digital technologies to improve customer experience. These actions will position the Group to increase returns for investors, create the capacity to invest in the future, and build a sustainable platform for growth.

The significant changes in the operating environment during 2020 have made it more important than ever that we accelerate our pivot to those areas where we can make the highest returns and have the best opportunities for growth. We are increasing our rate of investment in Asia, particularly in wealth, the Greater Bay Area, south Asia, trade finance, and sustainable finance. We are shifting our focus towards fee-generating businesses, and further reducing our costs. And our updated climate strategy shows our ambition to play a leading role in supporting our clients on the road to net zero.

Our actions will enable us to build on our strategic advantages as a global financial institution capable of bridging the economies of east and west. Find out more about the plan we outlined in February alongside our annual results.

Our strategic advantages

HSBC’s strategic advantages help us to connect customers to opportunities worldwide.

We are a leading international bank with access to high-growth markets. We maintain a privileged position in high-growth markets, particularly in Asia and the Middle East. We have a strong wealth business with balances of USD1.4 trillion in 2019, supported by a premier international wealth proposition and leading, full-scale banking operations in Hong Kong, the UK and Mexico.

Tham khảo xổ số miền bắcWe are also a leading trade and payments and cash management bank with USD17 billion of transaction banking adjusted revenue (in 2019). This is supported by our international network of 64 markets, which covers approximately 90 per cent of global GDP, trade and capital flows.

Our balance sheet strength is a further strategic advantage. We maintain a strong capital, funding and liquidity position. We operate a diversified business model with low earnings volatility. Read more about Our investment case.

Our strategy positions us to benefit from long-term global trends, despite near-term headwinds from softening global growth and lower interest rates. Asia is forecast to continue to take a larger share of global GDP. Global wealth is expected to continue to rise, supported by a faster pace of growth in Asia.

Asia-Pacific, excluding Japan, is the largest growth space in global wealth management.
